Selling painkillers and vitamins

When it comes to business development, products (especially tech) are positioned as either painkillers or vitamins. 

 

Painkillers are solutions to a specific pain point experienced by a user / company. Vitamins are solutions that facilitate the continued growth and “health” of a user / company. 

 

While most products can be framed as either, what’s even more important is to understand what the audience is looking for. Are they experiencing deep pains right now? If so, they need an answer to that problem. On the other hand, are they looking to continue improving their current situation? If so, they are likely looking for an opportunity that creates long-term strategic value.
